Change in Some Health Care Plans Result in Nursing Homes Kicking Patients Out of Facility
Patients are receiving letters from their health care plans stating they are no longer eligible for long-term care. One patient, a 68-year-old amputee with diabetes, memory loss and kidney disease, requires dialysis three times a week, while another is an 82-year old with congestive heart failure and diabetes who isn’t strong enough to transfer himself from the bed to his wheelchair.
Many of the patients have “given up everything- their apartments or mobile homes, their furniture, their burial insurance-to qualify.” To make matters worse, there is a shortage of assisted living facilities willing to serve the patients who no longer qualify for nursing home care, leaving so many patients with nowhere to go.
