Nursing Home Funding Shortfalls Contributes to Facility Closures

A 2016 study from Elijay LLP, a national accounting and consulting firm, ranked Wisconsin as having the highest daily shortfall per Medicaid patient in the United States. A Milwaukee-based Fortis Management Group that operates sixty-five long term care centers in six states filed for receivership in July 2017 and closed its Milwaukee headquarters in the fall of 2018.

In Wisconsin, a total of thirty-four facilities in the state have either closed or are in the process of closing since 2016. Industry representatives say that Medicaid losses are a significant contributing factor.
