  • Nursing Home Facility Inspected Following Resident's Unexpected Death, Fined $8,000 for Deficiencies

    In response to a nursing home resident’s recent death, one state’s Department of Health conducted an impromptu investigation of the nursing home facility.  After the investigation, the nursing home was fined more than $8,000 due to deficiencies of resident-related care.  However, the investigation did determine that the nursing home facility was not to blame for the resident’s death that initially sparked the investigation.   Read More...

  • New Bill Would Permit Coroners to Investigate Nursing Home Deaths, if Passed

    One state is considering a law that would enable a coroner to investigate nursing home deaths under certain circumstances. According to the bill, every death that occurs in a senior living facility would be reported to a coroner.   • Nursing Home Resident Dies “Naturally” from Sepsis, Family Suspects Neglect

    The family of a nursing home resident who developed a stage IV pressure ulcer and ultimately died from sepsis is suspicious of neglect.   • Jury Finds Skilled Nursing Facility Responsible for a Patient’s Fall-Related Injuries

    A jury recently determined that a nursing home facility was responsible for the pain and suffering during one of its patients’ final days alive. While one nurse aide was changing the victim’s bed sheets, the victim fell from the bed and sustained serious head injuries.   • Nursing Home Staff Neglected to Perform CPR on Multiple Residents, Despite Facility Policy

    One nursing home prompted an investigation by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”) after two patients died under staff care. According to records from CMS, neither patient had a Do Not Resuscitate order and no advance directive.   • Family of a Victim of Nursing Home Neglect is Counter-sued for Unpaid Medical Expenses

    A nursing home that acknowledged legal responsibility for the untimely death of one elderly patient is now counter-suing the family of the deceased for his unpaid expenses. A jury has already awarded $1 million for the family of the victim from the lawsuit that was filed against the nursing home.     A deadly fight between two residents in a nursing home is currently under investigation by local sheriff’s deputies. These residents were roommates in the nursing home, and it is currently unclear who initiated the fatal encounter.     In one state, elder advocates are bringing light to nursing home abuse and neglect and are attempting to provide a solution. Senators are pushing the creation of “elder death review teams” in their state’s judicial circuits in hopes of eradicating instances of elder abuse.   • Nursing Home Resident’s Bowels Rupture, Lawsuit Filed Alleging Staff Negligence

    A lawsuit is born following an incident in 2018 where an elderly woman perished from alleged nursing home negligence.
