Virginia Beach, Woodbridge, and Norfolk Nursing Homes on List of Worst Facilities in the Country

Three Virginia nursing homes were ranked among the 131 worst nursing homes in the country, according to a list of underperforming facilities released earlier this week by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  The Virginia nursing homes on the list include Beacon Shores Nursing and Rehabilitation (Virginia Beach, Virginia), Ruxton Health (Woodbridge, Virginia), and Harbour Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Center (Norfolk, Virginia).

Inspection reports for Beacon Shores, for example, reveal 50 health inspection deficiencies in 2006 and 2007.  The average among all Virginia nursing homes is eight.  Beacon Shores was cited for deficiencies that included: failure to ensure patients weren't abused or mistreated; failure to maintain proper nutrition; and, failure to have in place a working call system in patients' rooms and bathrooms.  Read more about Virginia's three worst nursing homes.

Thanks to CMS for exposing these facilities for what they are.  Perhaps a little sunshine in the form of public scrutiny will shame these facilities into providing better care.  Until then, they should be ashamed.
