World's Oldest Person Dies In California Nursing Home At Age 115
According to news reports, Gertrude Baines, the oldest person in the world, died at her California nursing home on Friday. She was 115 years old.
Baines was born April 6, 1894, in Shellman, GA. A black woman, Baines was the subject of much media fanfare when she cast her vote for Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, according to her obituary in the LA Times. After suffering a hip fracture eight years ago, Baines moved to Western Convalescent Hospital in Los Angeles, where she spent the remainder of her life.
Baines outlived her entire extended family, and her only daughter died at the age of 18 of typhoid fever. Kama Chinen, a Japanese woman born May 10, 1895, is now the oldest person in the world at 114 years, 127 days. For more, read the story.
